General advice and information on housing and homelessness
There are many organisations which provide advice on homelessness and / or general information.
Herts Young Homeless - independent charity providing information, advice and support aimed at young people on securing and maintaining accommodation (helpline 0844 833 0933)
YMCA - for information on emergency hostels in Hertfordshire, speak to someone on their local number 01707 351400.
StreetLink - can connect rough sleepers to local services for assistance. Visit the website to report someone sleeping rough, or call 0300 500 0914.
Homeless UK - a site managed by Homeless Link which provides advice and information on around 9000 services including day centres and hostels across the UK.
Directgov - provides advice to those at threat of eviction.
NHS UK - enables people to search for health services by service required and location.
Childline - advice and information directed at children and young people (helpline 0800 1111).
Streetmate - aimed at homelessness in London but also includes general, practical advice.
The Pavement - on-line magazine with features on issues relating to homelessness and listing of relevant services.
Shelter - campaigning charity which also provides information to people facing housing issues or homelessness (helpline 0808 800 4444).
Crisis - campaigning charity which provides links from its website to a wide range of support services.
Other useful organisations
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) - each CAB centre provides a free, independent, impartial advice service on your rights and responsibilities. The service is available to all. They have drop-in "clinics" (check for times) and an advice line available 10:00 - 16:00 Monday to Friday on 03444 111444. They have local centres in Stevenage (Swingate House, Danestrete, SG1 1AF) and Hitchin (Thomas Bellamy House, Bedford Road, SG5 1HL).
Local authorities - councils have a statutory duty to provide information, advice and guidance to all those experiencing homelessness. They have a duty to house (or provide temporary accommodation) for those in "priority need", including people with dependent children, 16 and 17 year olds, care leavers, those with severe mental health issues, veterans and the disabled.
